*** SOLVED *** Unable to change properties of layer

Post by gasconman » Mon Jan 04, 2016 11:55 am

I have a layer containing a slide-show that appears when users first visit my website
http://www.painting-photography-france.com/

This morning I decided to change the colour of this layer from dark grey to white and remove the pagination. It works fine as a test on my PC but when I publish it, the changes are not there; the layer is still dark grey and the pagination buttons still show.

I have published the entire website, published all files, and cleared the cache in Firefox, but the changes are still not showing. I check on another device and the problem exists there too, so it's not just, say, a cache problem on my machine.

I have no idea what's causing this problem so, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you did not publish all files?

See this related FAQ:

>>Maybe you did not publish all files?<<

Yes I did.

As I said, before publishing, I selected "Entire web site" and "Publish all files"

That's what makes it so puzzling.

Did you read the FAQ?
It lists all the possible reasons.

Just a shot in the dark that has happened to me before. Did you change the page to PHP from HTML? If so...when you upload, the HTMLwill remain and will be the default page over the PHP. You may want to try deleting all your files on the server and uploading everything from scratch.

Yes, Pablo I did. That's why it's so baffling.

1. I fired up WB this morning, saw there was a new version, and updated.
2. I altered the layer on my index.htm page
3. I tested locally and all was fine.
4. I published but the layer hadn't changed.
5. I checked my Publish settings and saw I had 'Entire website' and 'Files for modified objects only', and I thought, "Ah! there lies the problem"
7. I altered the settings to 'Entire website' and 'Publish all files' and published again
8. The layer was still exactly the same.

So then I cloned the index page to make a 'page1'.
I then deleted the problem layer and saved.
I then copied the layer (and the objects within it) one by one from my index page, pasted them to my 'Page1' and published again.

Now, looking at the published page1 - http://www.painting-photography-france.com/page1.htm - the layer doesn't even appear!

None of this makes any sense.

@mnwitten
Thanks for the suggestion but, no, these are htm files not phps

This is just a guess from looking at a code inspector, the last color is the darker (#362B36)

Code: Select all

background: #F2F5F7 url("images/xx.png") repeat-x scroll 50% top; color: #362B36;

I can ensure you that this has nothing to do with the update.

If it works locally then it must be related to publishing.
Make sure your website space is not full
Make sure the files are not read-only
And make sure all files are published (including folders and style sheets).

OK, I've resolved this issue and thought I should bring the thread to a close with an explanation.

I discovered today that my hosting service had migrated my website to another server just before Christmas BUT without telling me that I needed different FTP credentials to access it. They also left my websites on the old server.

So, the files I was publishing were arriving on the old server, but that was not the server being accessed by the public!

My hosting service (UK2.net) has apologised for the inconvenience.

So. my apologies to you Pablo, and to everyone else, for wasting your time
