RSS for the beginner

Post by Hbrownell »

Hi,

My client wants and RSS feed to supplement all his articles written. I'm clueless about this and I've tried a few ways to set up an RSS feed but found nothing that is anywhere near a step by step setup for the one in Wysiwyg. SO, please correct me if/where I'm wrong on this approach.

1. Write articles that have their own web page
2. Create RSS Feed logo for the Index (Or wherever)
3. Create headlines that link back to the articles
4. Publish index page with new RSS Feed icon
5. Potential client click on the RSS feed icon and the feed is automatically populated on their RSS Reader
6. Client now has RSS feed in their reader.
7. As I continue to build more articles, continue to update the rss feed with the new links (There is no automation here)

Follow up questions:
There is no RSS "Page" that I need to create (rss.xml)
I don't have to assign a "style" to the rss.xml (I can't find where you would do that)
How can I put the RSS feed as an option for different readers without having to have the client visit the website? (RSS Repository/Library)
I'm thinking about putting together a podcast as well, would I use the RSS in the same manner for the podcasts?

A RSS feed is a XML file with links to other pages. The RSS feed itself does not create pages. You will need to create these yourself.

1. Create the pages with content
2. On the home page (or anywhere else) add the RSS feed.
3. Create an item for each page.
4. Publish the website.

When you create a new page you will have to add it manually, this cannot be automated.

You can use the News feed Ticker object for this.
