Hi,
I think I've tried just about every combination of flex grid and image settings, except the one that works.
Simple flex grid, row height fixed, picture set to scale or contain, but nothing happens when I switch breakpoints. The photo just overflows the box. It's still overflowed when previewed in chrome or FF.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you set the flexbox properties of the image?
Note that using a fixed row for a flexible image is not recommended because then the image will not fit inside the cell.
